User Case Studies

A common use case within the geoscience research community is the use of UAVs when modelling geological outcrops. The methodology leverages photogrammetric methods to generate both a high resolution, orthorectified photo mosaic over a large area and to translate the data (lots of photos) from a 2D image to either 2.5 (e.g. GIS digital elevation models) or 3D forms in point clouds. From this point a structural geologist interprets the 3D map into geological information.

The Australian Plant Phenomics Facility (APPF) were interested in increasing accessibility to, and simplifying workflows of, automated wheat crop statistics to researchers, breeders and farmers. Focusing on metrics such as, absolute canopy height, yield estimates, and growth rates, the APPF wanted to create reusable and open source tools that would use photogrammetric data collected from drones to map these metrics.
